According to a report from Iran's Road Maintenance and Transportation Organisation, road transit through the country's land borders exceeded 12.4 million tonnes, highlighting Iran's continuing role in regional transport corridors.
Javad Hedayati, director of the organisation's Transit and International Transport Office, reported that from the beginning of Iranian year 1404 to the end of Azar, 12,437,993 tonnes of cargo transited the country's land borders in 561,582 international fleet trips.
Road transit and Iran's regional role
During the same period, more than 10.01 million tonnes were exported in approximately 419,000 road freight trips. More than 1.913 million tonnes were imported in over 87,000 trips.
Hedayati attributed growth in road transit and exports to stronger road infrastructure, the development of border terminals and expanding commercial ties with neighbouring countries. These measures have helped establish Iran as an important regional transit route.
Fleet operations and border terminal development
The official reported that 2,891 international freight transport companies and 68 international passenger transport companies and branches operate in the country, managing a substantial share of road movements.
More than 63,000 professional drivers operate around 51,000 commercial transport vehicles on international passenger and freight routes. The average age of the active fleet was estimated at about 12 years.
He added that 26 active border terminals in 12 provinces facilitate goods and passenger movements between Iran and neighbouring countries. Further terminal development could expand Iran's share of the regional transit market.
